Nová Cvernovka

Račianska 78 za Palmou

Nová Cvernovka (The New Thread Factory) is a cultural centrum. The name is a little bit confusing, we will explain it later… At first, it was an administrative building of a big chemistry factory called Dimitrovka, then there was a chemistry high school. A few years ago it was transformed into a home of many ateliers of designers, architects, artists, filmmakers, inventors and even startups. There is a Hidden Bar on the ground floor where you can get a drink, or you can join a current cultural program. You can also visit a parterre where small businesses are located - Giraffe bakery, zero-waste shop, kids fashion store Mile and even recycled fashion store FRL. It is not the same punk-style as before. In the backyard is a big playground, a terrace with a big stage for outdoor cultural events and community garden.

The whole story started somewhere different. It all began on Páričkova street near the main bus station where all the clues about the story were destroyed by developers in 2016. Up to that year, the more than a 100-year-old building of former thread factory was full of ateliers. But in summer of 2016, a new owner of the building decided that a group of artists, designers, architects and small businessmen have to move out. In the following couple of months, a few people from the thread factory established a Thread Factory Foundation to move everyone and everything to a new place. And after a couple of months based on many analysis and house meetings, a new destination was announced. The former chemistry factory on Racianska street. The building of the old high school was reconstructed in less than a year, and new residents used former classrooms for their ateliers, workshops, rehearsal rooms, shops and others.

The charm of disorganization in the former building was replaced by more opened relations with the public. Nowadays you can visit this place anytime, you can get a drink in a bar or on a terrace, or join a cultural event. Stay tuned and don’t forget to come to the day of open ateliers, every year on May 1st.
